Is India a single country or many countries which has been artificially united by the "great British". Someone once wrote that If you remove Russia from Europe, the rest of small countries are like states in India, with varied languages, cultures etc. Do you agree with this notion?

This is an old question asked and the explanation that it is a British construct is an imagination. Actually the country artificially created was Pakistan with geographically separated Western and Eastern parts which are culturally widely different. It broke into two in 25 years and might break further. It is a country divided by religion and Urdu.
Coming to India, your question is ambiguous. There are three distinct terms in English – country, nation and state.
A country is a geographical entity – geographical India really means the nations of India, Pakistan, Bangla, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka. The name sub-continent and South Asia are again artificial terms created to confuse Indians. USA which is a synthetic country united by a constitution and short history and is called a melting pot, while India is called a mosaic. The plurality is emphasized and the unity is deliberately undermined. For Hindus “aasetu himacala paryantam” is India. From the Cape to the Himalayas. Amarnath, Pasupatinath, Viswanath, Somanath and Ramanathare holy places for the majority population.
Nation is a political entity. India that was Bharata Varsha and Bharata Khanda has six states which received their present form in 20th century. If they were different countries, there would have been no need to discover India by Mr. Nehru. Even for this nation, the maps of India as given by govts of India, Pak, PRC etc are different.
State represents the authority of the national government. The map shown to be Indian nation to us is not fully in the State Control.
