You asked – Some historians say Telugu evolved from Halegannada (Old-Kannada). In such a case why not we claim old-kannada poets and their works as our ancestral heritage?
VVS – Telugu language has not evolved from Kannada at any stage. It is the Kannada and Telugu scripts that got separated from Halegannada scripts in the time frame CE 1100-1400. Telugu script is a refinement over Kannada script and more suited for cursive writing (golusu kattu) which was used in writing sale and other legal documents several decades ago. Kannada language has evolved in stages as given in the following : Evolution of Kannada : Proto Kannada -> Pre Old Kannada -> Old Kannada -> Middle Kannada -> New Kannada. I do not think such a clear cut analysis was made for Telugu. Telugu was standardized much earlier by Nannayya’s time itself like Sanskrit being standardized by Panini.
Raviprem Jagannath C Thanks for Responding sir ... I do not think such a clear cut analysis was made for Telugu. ... Mana Telugu baasha meedha research jaragaka povadamu it is really Unfortunate ..... elanti paristiti lo manamu eppatikee Adhi kavi Nannaya garane pattukuni koorchovali .....

Vvs Sarma Kannada and Tamil are respected by most people who speak those but Telugu is neglected by its own speakers. We never even succeeded in getting a linguistic state. Andhra Pradesh is in fact Andhra-Urdu Pradesh.Krishna Kasturi Telugu speaking people were too busy running after English perhaps...as in kanya sulkam....and teaching their kids to say Mummy, Daddy way back in the 60's itself. And i remember old movies had urdu words like Shabaash. I blame the movies ( and serials) for every ill in Telugu society
including bad fashion sense!
